What, you were expecting ‘Paris in the Spring?’ It is true that Paris in the Springtime is one of the most beautiful times of the year. However, this past week we had an unexpected and amazing weather event that turned Paris into something more magical than I have ever experienced before – SNOW! Having lived here for just over 3 years now, and been to visit more than 20 times since 2004, I can count on one hand the number of times I have seen it snow in the City of Light. Usually it is a light dusting that doesn’t stick but makes for a wonderful time. It started off much the same way this year. The weather forecast showed snow but then kept pushing it back. My friends and I were excited by the prospect but constantly disappointed when the forecast changed. Finally it began. Just a few small flakes floating in the light breeze. Then it turned to a flurry which gave way to a light snowfall. It was wonderful. Nothing was sticking but it was so beautiful to see. After an hour or so I looked back out of the window to witness a heavy snowfall. The table on my balcony was beginning to show a light layer of snow as were the cars on the street. I quickly put on my coat and took Harry for his first walk in the snow. It was brilliant. The quiet that comes with snowfalls is something I have always found mystical. Life seems to slow and sounds become muted as everything slowly turns white under a blanket of snow. It carried on for a few days and by the time it was over, we had what by Paris standards was a lot of snow. The architecture of Paris is enhanced in its beauty when covered in snow. Arches, curves, domes and streets all seem to have been perfectly designed to highlight snow’s beauty.
I spent several hours walking around the city taking pictures and I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed taking them. It truly was an amazing sight to behold.
